Creating a comfortable laundry room at home
Doing laundry is a routine task for mothers or household helpers, and since the amount of clothing to be washed is often substantial, it’s well worth designing or setting up a dedicated laundry room in your home — one equipped with both a washing area and an ironing area.
Most washing areas are placed in the backyard, since it’s usually uncovered and gets direct sunlight. However, a common issue is standing water, since the backyard wasn’t originally intended as a washing space. Bathrooms are also often used for washing clothes, even though this can get in the way of other family members who need the bathroom — not to mention that laundry detergent can make bathroom floors slippery. That’s why it’s advisable to create a dedicated laundry room.
Creating a laundry room doesn’t require a large space, since it can be equipped with simple furnishings such as a washing machine, washer, and dryer. It’s also a good idea to prepare supporting tools and materials for washing, such as buckets, clothes brushes, fabric softener, and so on, along with clothespins kept organized in an easily accessible storage cabinet so the laundry room stays tidy.
Also set up a storage cabinet and a place to hang clean clothes. For clothes that have been washed but aren’t fully dry yet, you can put up a clothesline inside the room. But if that feels like it’s in the way, you can install a drying rack for hanging damp clothes instead.
For color and lighting, choose bright colors such as red, orange, or purple to give the laundry room a brighter, more spacious feel — try not to add too many ornaments to the walls, to keep a simple, appealing look. White can also make a laundry room feel more spacious, and you can complete the space with real plants for a fresher feel.
