Skylight glass is a part of the home often used to bring extra light into a room. It’s typically placed in rooms such as bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, and others — or any room that needs natural light where windows alone don’t provide enough.

That’s why skylight glass is usually the solution for brightening a room during the day without needing to turn on the lights, helping save on electricity. Skylight glass is more often installed at the top or on the roof of a room, facing directly toward the sun, though it isn’t limited to that position and can be used elsewhere in a room too. For a skylight positioned overhead, extra care is needed, since you’ll want glass that’s safe and strong enough to withstand continuous sun exposure. Position the skylight glass so that sunlight can enter the room optimally between 10:00–11:00 AM.

Apply skylight glass in larger rooms so the heat is distributed evenly; if you decide to place skylight glass in a smaller room, make sure there’s proper air circulation. Skylight glass should also be fitted with window film so the heat from incoming sunlight can be reduced. Avoid choosing a film that’s too dark, as this can increase the risk of the glass cracking. The ideal film for skylight glass has a VLT of 40%, so only 40% of the light passes through. There are various types of glass used for skylights, but it’s best to choose tempered glass, which is much safer to use.

Tempered glass consists of two layers of glass fused together with a laminate layer in the middle, so if the glass cracks or breaks, the fragments won’t fall far if the glass is positioned overhead. Annealed glass is not recommended, as it shatters into sharp shards when cracked or broken, which can be dangerous.
